from morning to noon, the wood remained unlit. Despite Baal’s prophets’ vigorous entreaties, cuttings, prancing, etc. Elijah told his competitors to beseech their god to ignite their offering. Two bullocks were to be dressed and laid upon wood as sacrifices to Elijah’s God and false Baal. These 850 along with the people of Israel journeyed to the mount. Upon meeting Ahab, Elijah instructed the king to gather 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the grove at Mount Carmel. Elijah reassured him that God would hide him and keep him from harm. Upon hearing of Elijah’s intent to speak with Ahab, Obadiah feared the consequences for himself should he, as governor, inform the king about this matter. He had hidden one hundred prophets, by fifties, in a cave and supplied their needs. The King’s governor, Obadiah, was secretly sympathetic to the work of Elijah and the prophets. God ordered Elijah to present himself before King Ahab. The prophet carried the dead son up to the loft where he had been sleeping, stretched himself upon the corpse three times, then prayed to the Lord. The widow had a son who died while Elijah was boarding in her home. She furnished a morsel to Elijah, and thereafter Elijah lodged in her home. Elijah promised the widow that her supply of meal and oil would not fail until rain revisited the land. They would eat, then die, for the lack of rain had caused a famine. She was gathering sticks for a fire to prepare it for her and her son. She replied that she only possessed a little meal and oil. Upon arriving at Zerephath Elijah encountered the widow and asked her for water and a morsel to eat. This brook dried up, so God told Elijah to journey to Zerephath where a widow would sustain him. God told Elijah to head east to the brook Cherith where he would be fed by ravens. Ferdinand Bol’s depiction of Elijah being fed by an angelĮlijah the Tishbite (of Gilead) informed Ahab, king of Israel, that there would be neither dew nor rain for years in the land.
